In the online Master of Education in K-12 English as a Second Language Education degree program from Jones International University, licensed educators have a flexible option for pursuing an additional endorsement as a teacher of students who are learning English as a second language.

As a student in this online ESL education degree program, individuals will work through coursework that has been designed to augment their professional knowledge, skills and aptitude.

  • Demonstrate their knowledge of first and second language acquisition and learning, including the nature of bilingualism and multilingualism, and the relationships and implications of each in the teaching of second language learners.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of the foundations of the English language and the principles of English language acquisition, including linguistics, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics, and the contrast between the features and styles of English with other languages.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of language teaching methodology and instructional techniques for teaching a wide range of linguistically diverse K-12 students founded on scientifically-based research and proven and effective applications; content based strategies; identification, selection, evaluation, design and adaptation of appropriate instructional materials; and child and adolescent literature from various cultures.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of assessment practices and applications in the instructional process.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of communication strategies and availability of resources.
  • Demonstrate their ability to self assess the effectiveness of instruction, as based on the achievement of students.
