Earn a Degree While Serving Your Country.

Veterans today face a difficult transition from military to civilian life. Among the challenges involved in moving from combat to career, it can be difficult to land a job-especially if you've been holding off on earning your degree until after you've finished your tour of duty.

Our Military Education section is dedicated to helping members of the military sort through the various options for tuition assistance and other programs offered by the federal government-as well as online study options for those still serving.

Here, you'll be able to find in-depth information on the tuition benefits available for people working in every branch of the military, as well as military distance education options. Topics covered include:

Tuition assistance for members of the military.

The biggest program for military education benefits is the GI Bill. Under the GI Bill, there are numerous other benefit programs that you may qualify for-including the Post-9/11 GI Bill, the Montgomery GI Bill for Active Duty and Veterans, the Montgomery GI Bill for Selected Reserves, the Reserve Education Assistance Program, and more. You may be eligible for more than one program, and sometimes, you'll have to choose between several.

Generally, GI Bill benefits are available throughout all branches of the military. They usually cover Army distance education programs as well as distance education in the Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard.

In addition, there's the Armed Forces Tuition Assistance program (TA) for all branches of the military. Unlike the GI Bill benefits, this money is delivered to your school directly-and it's mainly for those on Active Duty or in the Reserves. Its benefits and restrictions vary based on the branch of the military you're in. Details for military members include:

  • The Army. Members of the Army can receive up to $4,500 per year, and the funds are available to active duty members, ARNG active duty, and reserves.
  • The Navy. Active duty and reserve members of the Navy receive up to $4,000 per year.
  • The Marines. Marines can receive up to $4,500 per year. Only active-duty marines are eligible.
  • The Air Force. Members of the Air Force can receive up to $4,500 if they are on Active duty or in the reserves.
  • The Coast Guard. Members of the Coast Guard, including those on active duty, selective reserves, and civilian employees. The program covers tuition and lab fees only.

Military distance education.

Many members of the military make the decision to hold off on college until they return from active duty. However, online military education makes it easier than ever for members of the military to earn credits toward a degree before the end of their service.

For military members, this can mean a faster and easier transition to the workforce. We discuss your online options in depth-as well as how they're handled by various federal tuition reimbursement programs.

Benefits and online education for spouses and families.

Under many programs, some military tuition benefits may also extend to your spouse or other members of your family. We discuss benefits for spouses and families in detail here.

In addition, it can be difficult for spouses who are married to a member of the military to earn a degree - if they have to follow a military spouse periodically between bases and assignments. Online degrees are the only programs designed to keep up with traveling military spouses and families-and we provide an overview of the options.

Online degrees for the military.

If you'd like to go into the military or major in studies that will help you advance your military career, there are quite a few different military online degrees and options you can choose-some of which are online. Our articles cover both traditional and distance education options to help those serving move forward in their military careers.

Tuition scams targeting members of the military.

Some schools target returning veterans heavily for recruitment-because they stand to gain a hefty payment from your government tuition benefits if you enroll. You may find yourself targeted by a school regardless of whether you're a good fit-and you may be stuck with a heavy and unnecessary student loan debt if your benefits don't cover the whole bill. We'll talk about this trend in depth, and help you spot and avoid tuition scams.
