Description

Students explore various aspects of, and techniques needed to write for magazines. During the course, students will also identify their key interests and how they can focus those interests into marketable pieces of writing.

Outcomes

NOTE: This is a self-directed course. Students will receive feedback on the final week`s assignment. Exercises completed before that week will be used to tailor the course to the student`s needs but will not receive individual feedback. Assessment consists of final critique of article and feedback on submission choices.

Assessment

Students identify areas of interests. Students research periodicals for submission and guidelines. Studentes learn basic interviewing techniques. Students learn basic outlining techniques. Students complete an article for submission.

Instructor

Carol Givner is a best-selling author with six books to her credit, two of which have been nominated for the Frankfurt Award. She has been featured in numerous popular magazines, and is also the Editor-in-Chief of WORDSMITH, a publication that has been critically acclaimed on National Public Radio and at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. She has taught a number of online courses that focus on the areas such as writing poetry, fiction, and copy for magazines.
