Description
Bring your tired sentences, your terminally ill passive verbs, and your ailing descriptors.
Through this course, we`ll work on reviving your writing!
We`ll use adjective adrenaline to pump up your text. Take a dose of verb vaccine and watch them spring to life. At the end of this course, your sentences will be off the gurney. Your writing will pulse with exciting words and phrases.
This course explores how to revive lifeless writing. By examining certain key elements, students will identify, correct and strengthen words and phrases within their writing.
This course utilizes CPR (Clear, Pump, Resuscitate) to accomplish this goal. Students clear their writing of adverbs and various extraneous words. They will also look at how to pump up their writing through the use of adjectives, descriptions, and sensory details.
Outcomes
NOTE: This is a self-directed course. Students will receive feedback on the final week`s assignment. Exercises completed before that week will be used to tailor the course to the student`s needs but will not receive individual feedback.
- Students will be assessed based on weekly writing assignments.
- Students will complete a complete evaluation and rewrite for their main assignment.
Assessment
Outcomes of this course are:
- Identify and eliminate extraneous words and phrases using provided techniques.
- Strengthen text with stronger adjectives, descriptive phrases, and sensory details.
- Develop a pattern of identification and clarification in future writing.
- Rewrite an existing section of text or create a new work utilizing these techniques.
Instructor
Alison (Katherine) Dubois has earned a number of writing related degrees, in areas such as: creative writing, Literature, and Journalism, and is the recipient of four national poetry awards. Dubois has also worked as a reporter for nearly a dozen newspapers and been a freelance writer for over two decades.
