Description

Individuals will learn how to pitch editors that will net their first sale. Whether they are looking to make money during their spare time or want to pursue freelancing full time. They'll learn which department to address for the type of feature they want to write. And which departments are more likely to be receptive.


Outcomes

  • Know how to present their ideas for freelance work.
  • Feel confident to approach the appropriate editor for their proposed piece
  • Should have contacted several editors and newspapers about work
  • Should have successfully sold one or more features.


Assessment

  • Student will demonstrate their knowledge of AP (Associated Press) style through a series of mini exercises and their article.
  • Students will demonstrate their ability to present their work by pitching it to one or more editors/newspapers

Instructor

Alison (Katherine) Dubois has earned a number of degrees, including: an M.A in creative writing, a B.A. in Literature, and an A.A. in Journalism. She also holds a certificate in desktop publishing, and is the recipient of four national poetry awards. Dubois has also worked as a reporter for nearly a dozen newspapers and been a freelance writer for over two decades, and teaches a number of online courses, including topic such as: Freelance, Creative, Non-Fictional, and Newspaper writing.
