Description
The goal of this course is to bring together the many aspects of music and words that converge as one complete expression known as a song; to show how these musical qualities interact as they take on different structures and forms chosen by the songwriter to best express a song's meaning. It is hoped that the student songwriter will develop a greater understanding of how songs are created and crafted as well as a deeper connection with one's own creative process.

- The songwriting student will examine the structures of songs that have been proven successful in the popular, country, r and b, hip-hop, folk, jazz, theatrical and classical worlds.
- Students will discover the shapes and musical constructions that determine our physical and emotional responses and attractions to the music.
- Students will learn the use and impact of modulations, minor and modal moods and the development of verse, bridge, chorus, repetition, hooks and grooves.
- The course will have an intensive section on lyric writing and language sensitivity
- The student will be expected to create original pieces as assigned that demonstrate an understanding of the relevant goals of the instructor.
- Students will be expected to take quizzes, finish and submit all assignments and complete a final project and final exam.
- Students should be prepared to revise and re-write assignments when required by Instructor.
