Activities Professional Part 1 (MEPAP)

ProTrain Online

The Activities Profession is a new one and is meeting a need in the healthcare field. It is truly a unique profession in health care because it is more interested in "what is RIGHT with the person rather than what is wrong." It puts you in a position to really make a difference in the lives of those you serve. The sky is the limit on what you can accomplish and your creativity will have a wide opportunity for use. It is a profession that allows for great flexibility in defining your work and in utilizing your skills and talents.

The Activity Professional Training Program trains students to provide a well rounded activity program for the aged residents in long term care, adult day programs, retirements homes, and senior centers.

The program teaches students how to meet the psychological and physical needs of the elderly through a varied activity program. The student will learn program planning, federal regulations, documentation guidelines and administrative techniques. After successfully completing the course, and working in the field of activities, an individual may be eligible to qualify for national certification through the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals.

How Does it Work?

The course conducted via the Internet, will consist of 11 units defined above, consisting of 90 core competencies. Course consists of 90-hours web-based instruction that includes the following:

  • 11 unit lectures, core competencies 1-90
  • Textbook reading (Included)
  • Internet links
  • Chat room 2 hours/month (Tuesdays)
  • 5 Exams and a comprehensive final exam

A student who works in an elderly activity or recreation setting will complete the 90 hour practicum/internship through a series of projects and assignments in addition to the module assignments. These practicum projects and assignments are infused into the curriculum and are designed to build, evaluate, and assess the activity program and department. All assignments for the practicum are posted in the MEPAP Practicum/Internship class. Final practicum assignments, projects, and journals will also be submitted in the practicum class.

A student who does not work in an activity or recreation setting will be required to complete the 90 hours of internship experience. The goal of the internship is to provide the student with the real world experience of activity program delivery and to apply the skills and knowledge learned in the classroom. The student and program instructor/advisor will work together to determine a practicum site appropriate for a quality learning experience. A training plan will be designed to outline the internship tasks and duties to be completed by the student under the direction of a qualified site supervisor.
