As stated in another question on DistEd, the first step is to get a bachelor's degree. Once you have this, then you can focus on getting your teaching certification. Some online degree programs include a teaching certification component, however many degree programs require you to take additional courses beyond the degree requirements. You can earn your teaching certification usually with night and weekend classes, and most programs include a student teaching component. This allows you to practice in an actual classroom setting and learn from more experienced teachers. There is usually a final certification test you must pass as well.
