It depends. There are many different types of counselors, from school counselors who work in public education to marriage counselors with their own practices. Depending on your specialty and the licensing requirements in the state where you live, you may need only a Bachelor's or be required to have a Master's to be licensed.

Some fields and states require professional certification as well as a degree; this is usually true in education, and some states may require you to have teaching and counseling certification as well as teaching experience to work as a school counselor. You may be required to take continuing education courses to maintain your certification.
