Ummmm, as far as my understanding is concerned in regards to the advantages and disadvantages of a theoretical based thesis/dissertation, I would have to say that that the question is slightly moot. I say this because, it my understanding a thesis/dissertation is almost completely theoretically based. In fact, the idea of a thesis/dissertation is to contribute new knowledge to the theoretical base of any field.
