How long, typically, should a module stay open for a course? few days, week, or entire semester?
I am speaking about an online course. Does all of the modules stay open for the entire semester?

Yes and no. A lot of it depends on the type of course you are taking. Modules will stay open depending on the limits set by the instructor/professor or specific type of training you are undergoing. Some will stay open the duration of the online course and beyond so you can go back and refresh your memory of the material or to study for the final exam.
Some modules will close as soon as you complete a quiz, exam, or other type of assessment for the sole fact you are done with them and will not be tested on the material again. This is usually setup for you to proceed with the course as directed by the instructor or online training provider.
We always recommend students print off the material they want to review at a later date. You can make notes on them, scan them, study, etc..
