Well, that all depends on what type of distance education program you plan on pursuing. While distance education has become a typically Internet based discipline, there are however, many other types as well, including correspondence and telecommunication. But, now that I said this, the general concepts of any distance education program is always the same.
Typically, distance education programs are more of a self-driven type of curriculum, which means that individuals, while guided by an instructor, will have more fluidity in their study times. So, say if you join a distance education program you will be given a curriculum that will probably have a number of key assignments, like exams, papers, presentations, that each student will have to meet, but that will give them the general freedom to study at anytime that is good for them.
More often than not, distance education programs do not require students to attend classes; however, they ask that the students study, work on homework, and complete projects on their own time.
But, having said all of this let me also say that there are a number of distance education programs, and like snowflakes, no two are the same. So, what you should do is find a distance education program that you like, and contact them about the specifics of the program.
