Throat inflammation can be caused by many different types of infection ranging from a common sore throat to throat cancer. Several types of infections are pharyngitis, laryngitis, epiglottitis, and streptococcal infections (strep throat). Most of these infections are caused by viruses and are easily treated by a doctor. However, left untreated throat inflammation could cause life threatening infections. Throat cancer would be the most threatening of the above listed throat inflammations. Severe, untreated strep throat could also lead to death. It is recently believed by researchers that Mozart died from complications of a bad case of strep. If you or somone you know is experiencing throat inflammation, I would recommend seeing a doctor as soon as possible.
