At a USA university what grade does an external student get when he is absent for a final examination? Is it recorded as an absence or a failing grade?

Most of the time decisions about the final examination of a class are left up to the professor of the specific class. If a student knows he or she is going to miss an exam for a reason that is understandable, I highly recommend contacting the professor of the class and asking him or her about alternative options for taking the exam. However, if the final exam is never taken then this will most likely result in a zero score. I have yet to come across a professor that will give credit for a final exam that was never taken.
